It was maybe like Entertainment tonight and gossip mags you saw in line at the grocery store. But we didn’t have the internet so stuff like this wasn’t always in your face.

Obviously there was also his appearance, which was changing and getting weird. All kinds of rumours about how he slept in a hyperbaric chamber and had a pet chimpanzee and the elephant man’s bones and yadda yadda yadda. I don’t remember hearing about weird shit until well after Bad came out, but yes people thought he was really fuckin weird. In kindergarten and grade 1 “thriller” was my favorite album. And for fuck's sake, educate yourself on child sexual abuse before you open your mouth to defend a predator (not you BoyScholar, just people in general lol). The least you can do is support these and future victims of abuse by, if nothing else, giving them the benefit of the doubt. I don't give a shit if anybody listens to MJ after this, do what you want but all I know is that I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to his music again after watching that.

But we will never, ever stop allowing children and vulnerable people to be victimized by predators if we can't grapple with what happens when powerful men are given free reign.and from personal experience, there are far less powerful and less wealthy men who are enabled to do this to children, not to mention Larry Nassar, Penn State, the Catholic Church and whatever else will come up after this - and there *will* be something else. He was a constant staple in my household. I understand it's difficult for people who grew up with Michael, like I did. No one on this planet can fake the pain I saw on that screen. It's heartbreaking, and anyone who continues to deny the allegations and further destroy those men's lives with death threats and shit need to seriously reevaluate themselves. It does, however, continue to follow Wade's and James' stories as they and their families dealt – and still deal with – the fallout.
#LEAVING NEVERLAND REDDIT TRIAL#
I watched part two on HBO Now, and unfortunately it doesn't go much farther than presenting what was on the news during the trial in terms of other parties complicit in the abuse. But to suggest the moms are idiots who should have known the world’s biggest celebrity was molesting their kids demonstrates a total lack of understanding of the context And it’s shocking and terrible and of course everyone wishes someone would have stopped it. Only now is it clear that it was probably true, that he really did do these things. The common refrain at the time was that because he grew up as a child star, he didn’t get to have a childhood, so maybe he was just trying to relive it. There was a televised court case in the early 90s, and everyone knew how weird Michael Jackson was, and how much time he spent with kids, and still no one in America was really sure. It doesn’t make you savvy or street smart. Judging these moms and saying you’d have never fallen for it is not impressive when you’ve just watched a 2-4 hour documentary about it 30 years after the fact. They don’t understand a world where people didn’t assume everyone might be a pedophile, and they don’t understand that MJ was beyond a superstar.
#LEAVING NEVERLAND REDDIT FULL#
This thread is kind of interesting because it’s clearly full of people who were too young to remember the late 80s and early 90s, and just don’t get how this could have happened. Once they saw him less as an adult man spending unusually large amounts of time with their vulnerable child, and instead saw him as a lonely boy who was so desperate for a friend, it was likely pretty easy to ignore what now seems like predatory behavior. Both mothers remark that MJ felt like a child to them, even almost a son to them. Not to mention MJ did clearly enjoy spending time with these children as friends. I think all those factors accumulated to parents lowering their guard. MJ showered these families (not just the child, the entire family and the children's core guardian, aka the mom) with tons of attention, made them feel remarkable and "chosen." That's a powerful feeling. This kind of friendship, although obviously strange, could be huge for your child.Īnd then there's the feeling of being special. Secondly, there's the sense that this is incredible for your child's career. This isn't just some creepy guy off the street. I think they explain pretty clearly what went through the parents mind.įirst, there's the kind of appeal to authority fallacy - this person is SO FAMOUS, nearly God-like status, so there's the assumption of safety.
